What is an orthodontist?
Orthodontics is a specialty in the field of dentistry that deals with the growth and development of the jaws and the alignment of the dentition.  An orthodontist must first receive a degree in dentistry and then complete training from an accredited program for two years to receive a certificate in orthodontics.

What is a good age for a child to have an orthodontic consultation?
The American Association of Orthodontists suggests that children be seen by an orthodontist by the age of seven.

Will orthodontic treatment begin at that age?
Usually, the patient will be evaluated and placed on an annual recall to determine the ideal time to initiate orthodontic treatment.

Is age a limiting factor in having orthodontic treatment?
Adult orthodontic treatment is not limited by age.  Good health of the supporting tissue would be a limiting factor in adult orthodontic treatment.

How long does it take to complete orthodontic treatment?
Treatment time is determined by degree of difficulty and patient cooperation.  The average full treatment case requires twenty to twenty eight months.

Is orthodontic treatment painful?
Placement of the orthodontic appliances is not painful.  The braces are cemented to the surface of the tooth.  The teeth can be tender to chew with for the first couple of days after each adjustment.  It is similar to having a sore muscle, if you do not use the muscle it is not sore.  Likewise, if you eat softer foods the first few days, then the teeth are not sore.  Our office uses the newest technology in orthodontic appliances to apply the lightest forces available.  This reduces the chance that a patient will experience discomfort.

How much do braces cost?
The fees for orthodontic treatment will vary depending upon the degree of difficulty of the case and the amount of time required to treat the case.  Treatment fees are spread over the length of treatment with no interest charges.  Fees are discounted for full payments prior to treatment.  Orthodontic consultations are complimentary.

Do you have colors for the braces?
Elastic ligature ties are changed at each visit and come in a rainbow of colors.  The retainers placed after orthodontics can be designed by the patients also.
