Handling Emergencies

On occasion there will be things that happen to the teeth or braces that will require immediate attention. If you have an emergency or any questions about the braces, please feel free to call us.

It would be best to contact our office first with emergency situations (rather than your general dentist's office) as the braces or appliances may complicate the treatment of the emergency, even if the problem is not with the orthodontic appliances. During business hours call our office and we will work you into the schedule as soon as possible.

After business hours, contact Dr. Klein at home (913-592-2387).

On evenings and weekends, it would be a good idea to call the office answering machine if you do not reach Dr. Klein at home. There is the possibility that Dr. Klein is not available and that another orthodontist is on call to handle office emergencies. If you do not call the office machine, you will not be alerted to this fact.

Broken bands and brackets are not usually considered emergency situations unless they are causing the patient discomfort. Please contact our office to inform us of the problem so that we can allow time to repair the damage if the schedule permits. If we are unaware of the breakage before the visit, then the repair may require a separate visit. Feel free to remove loose or broken appliances or wires if you are able. Small wire cutters, clippers, tweezers and needle nose pliers are handy items in these situations.

Although some discomfort is expected with the orthodontic appliances, extreme pain or swelling is not a normal occurrence. If you have any questions, please call! We are here for you.
